Where to Stay in the Faroe Islands

If you decide to enjoy the views of the snow-capped mountain peaks, see the numerous waterfalls, gorges, and beautiful lakes, to dive or get acquainted with the islanders and taste the local cuisine… In a word, if you want to feel the Faroes then we advise you to book the accommodation in advance. The Faroe Islands are the choice for real adventure-lovers and they don’t offer the wide variety of hotels.
On the islands, several types of accommodation are available: you can stay at a hotel, apartment or a guesthouse, choose a hostel or experience a camping life – it depends on your goals and estimated budget.
Camping
Camping is the most affordable way to see the country. Naturally, it’s more suitable for a warm season, but this is the best way to experience a country and culture from the inside. In the last few years camping has become increasingly popular in the Faroe Islands, not only among the tourists, but it’s the choice of the locals too.  However, while planning to become more nature-friendly, please, remember that camping is only permitted at designated campsites. It is not allowed to settle over roads, at rest stops, laybys or view areas. In addition, please note that some campsites are for tents only. If you chose camping don’t forget that the Faroes’ weather is quite unpredictable, therefore you’ll need sturdy, waterproof and windproof camping equipment. Also, note that Caravan camping is less convenient in the Faroe Islands as the number of caravans for rent is limited and it is rather expensive to bring a caravan from the mainland to the islands. In the Faroe Islands, there are 21 designated camping sites. On special web-sites for campers, you can find the full list, indicating the conditions and residence requirements.
Hostels
Divide the number of camping sites by 7 and you will get the number of hostels in the Faroes. Actually, there are 3 of them. 2 hostels are located in Tórshavn, and the third one is in Sandavágur, Vágar. All hostels are, of course, budget-oriented, offer sociable accommodation, where one can rent a bed and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes kitchen.
Hotels
Although 17 out of 18 islands are officially considered to be inhabited, do not forget that some of them have only 43, 11, 6 or even 1 inhabitant (the island of Koltur). Therefore, only 9 islands can actually boast the hotels, most of which, of course, are situated in Tórshavn. Other locations include Runavík, Skálavík, Vágar Airport, Klaksvík, Vágur, Tvøroyri and Viðareiði.
What do the hotels offer to their potential guests? Some hotels feature a turf-topped roof and wooden interior; they promise cozy rooms and all the facilities you need to get the most out of your stay. Others emphasize the fact that they are located on a hillside with impressive views of the capital. Some hotels hint at a unique design. While others attract tourists by accommodation in the heart of the capital, within walking distance of the harbor and the historical part of the city.

Apartments/Guesthouses
Apartments or guesthouses is a good alternative to all of the above-mentioned accommodations. They are cozy and most home-like; they offer all the necessary amenities and do not force you to live among the strangers. Only you and your companions.
